Woman arrested after 23 animals rescued from Gainesville apartment

A woman was arrested earlier this week after Hall County officials reportedly rescued 23 animals from a Gainesville apartment.

A report from Hall County Animal Services said the county's animal control service was called to assist with an eviction at Cleveland Street Apartments on the southwest side of the city Tuesday morning. When animal control officials arrived, they reportedly found the animals living in what they described as poor conditions.

Deborah Lynn Fricks, age 65, was arrested on charges of animal cruelty. In total, 22 cats and one dog were rescued from the apartment.

Officials said all of the animals have been surrendered to Hall County Animal Services and will be put up for adoption in the coming days.

“Some of the cats will be housed at Petco in Cumming and some will go to PetSmart in Flowery Branch, which is a fantastic way for us to get them in front of potential adopters and keep space available in the shelter," Hall County Animal Shelter Supervisor Stephanie Maloch said.

Anyone interested in adopting animals being held at the animal shelter can visit the shelter on Barber Road near Gainesville Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or go to the shelter's website.

“Any time we take in a large influx of animals, it puts a burden on our shelter capacity,” Hall County Animal Services Director Trey Garcia said. “We want to continually encourage adoptions, to ensure we have space available for these types of intake situations.”
