The Northeast Georgia History Center will offer a Homeschool Day program about the War of 1812 on Thursday, October 19th from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Despite the program being developed to serve homeschooled families, all are welcome to participate, according to a release from the organization.
“The War of 1812, fought between the United States and England with Native American allies from 1812 to 1815, played a pivotal role in fostering American national identity” the release read.
The program will feature meet-- and-- greets with historical figures Francis Scott Key, Mary Pickersgill, and Dolley Madison to learn about the writing of the national anthem, the creation of the Star Spangled Banner, and national treasures saved from the White House before it was burned by the British. Participants will also feature live demonstrations from living history interpreters from Georgia's Fort Daniel.
“Oh, Say Can You See” with Francis Scott Key will be held at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. During the scheduled program, attendees will be able to learn about the history of the United States National Anthem through an interactive musical program with special guest Pendleton Brown.
Scheduled programs will also feature a firing demonstration with Fort Daniel Living History Interpreters utilizing historically accurate reproduction firearms beginning at 12:30 p.m.
During the event, the center will also have ongoing stations where participants can explore during the program.

Georgia's Fort Daniel: Explore the history of Fort Daniel built during the War of 1812 with living history interpreters.

Dolley Madison Saves History: Help Dolley Madison decide which national treasures to save from the White House before the British invasion.

Sew the Star-Spangled Banner: Join Mary Pickersgill and her assistants in hand-sewing the iconic Star-Spangled Banner and create your own flag design.

Sailboat Craft & Naval Battle (Craft kit purchase required): Craft a wooden sailboat model and test its mettle in "naval battle" pools.

Childhood During the War of 1812: Explore the experiences of young people during the era through the story of American Girl Doll Caroline.

Exhibit Scavenger Hunt: Embark on a scavenger hunt to uncover War of 1812 trivia hidden within the exhibits.
The event is free for Members of the Northeast Georgia History Center and regular admission fees for non-members.
