Habersham County Emergency Services personnel Tuesday trained with Habersham Quarry employees on methods of response and worst-case scenarios at the facility in Demorest.
Emergency services personnel discussed what emergency responses looked like and how to stem bleeding at the scene, as well as shared information that E-911 dispatchers would need in the event of an emergency.
“Quarry employees then took the time to practice tourniquet application and took the delivery of four Stop the Bleed kits to be placed strategically throughout the quarry,” HCES Captain Matt Ruark said.
The onsite training came at the request of the Heidelberg Materials management team as part of the company’s safety training week.
“With assistance from City of Gainesville Fire/Georgia Search and Rescue TF-1, emergency services members simulated a mock rescue,” Ruark said. “During this rescue, members simulated a worst-case scenario with a worker on top of one of the machines in cardiac arrest. Crews accessed the victim, placed a Lucas CPR device on him, and performed Basic Life Support while crews were setting up a lowering system to bring the victim down. All this was accomplished in under 20 minutes.”
The training is said to help HCES and the quarry employee team develop plans of action for any future emergency events that might arise.
