Gainesville's Horizon Academy aims to help students at risk of failing

By Logan Landers Anchor/Reporter

Gainesville City Schools recently launched Horizon Academy which aims to help students who are considered at-risk of failing and are adapting to life in the United States.

The program is housed inside Gainesville High School's Ninth Grade Center but hopes to lease property and open a standalone school.

"It serves two focus groups, one would be students who are new to the country and are acclimating to American schools & the second group would be students who are seniors and are behind on credits and need that extra support so that they'll graduate in May," Directory of Secondary Education, Tonya Sanders says. "We've gotten positive feedback from parents and other stakeholders and it's definitely something that will grow and meets the needs of our unique population and City Schools."

Early data indicates that 85 newcomers and 74 at-risk Seniors have enrolled in the program at the beginning of the school year.
