CUMMING, Ga. – West Forsyth was ready to play in front of their home fans in the nightcap of the second day of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic.
The Wolverines put up big play after big play in all three phases, including returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown in a 40-7 win over Cherokee Bluff Thursday night.
After returning the opening kick 90 yards, the Wolverines showed up defensively, getting the ball back for a two play, 56-yard drive that ended in six more points.
A punt return touchdown at the next opportunity for West Forsyth quickly had the score at 20-0 before three minutes had ticked off the clock.
The Wolverines kept the pressure on, allowing just 41 yards of offense for the Bears in the first half on the way to a 40-0 halftime lead.
The Bears put together a promising drive late in the third quarter, getting all the way into the red zone, but the Wolverine defense stood up yet again, forcing their second fumble and keeping the shutout intact.
Cherokee Bluff got one more opportunity in the fourth quarter and cashed in an eight play, 71-yard drive with an 8-yard run from Conner Hulsey that got the game to the final score.
Cherokee Bluff finished with 161 yards of total offense but also had 14 penalties totaling 104 yards that kept the Bears from getting going on that side of the football. West Forsyth ended with 223 yards of offense, 195 of which were on the ground.
The Bears will look to bounce back with a matchup next Friday on the road against Adairsville.
