A Hayesville man was arrested Wednesday morning after he allegedly fled from authorities in Towns County.
The Towns County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post Severo Escorza Tapia, 51, of Hayesville, was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. Additional charges are pending.
The Georgia State Patrol and the Union County Sheriff's Office said they were pursuing a reckless driver into Towns County on Ga 76 East. The vehicle, driven by Tapia, wrecked on Byers Creek Road at Red Farm Road.
The suspect ran from the wreck on foot. The Towns County Sheriff's Office, Union County's tracking K-9 and the Towns County drone were called to assist in the search.
Residents were alerted through the Towns County Sheriff's Office Facebook page about the search. Sheriff Ken Henderson thanked the community for calling in locations and sightings of the suspect.
A Towns County resident reportedly spotted Tapia running on his property and notified deputies.
Tapia was eventually arrested after he was spotted crossing a field.
