Buford commercial building evacuated for gas leak report

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Gwinnett firefighters responded to a report of an initial business fire alarm at the Costco Wholesale Warehouse on Mall of Georgia Boulevard in Buford Monday evening.

Officials with Gwinnett Fire say an employee advised 911 that smoke was coming from the back of the Costco building, and everyone was evacuating the business at around 6:45 p.m..

Firefighters arrived and once the building was confirmed to be evacuated, noticed hazy conditions caused by a gas leak in a coolant system.

Firefighters collaborated with on-site building maintenance to shut down any systems connected to the leak.

Firefighters and Gwinnett County Hazardous Materials Teams utilized atmospheric monitoring devices to survey air quality conditions while safely ventilating the structure with fans.

No injuries were reported and the gas leak was under control within thirty minutes of initial public safety crews' arrival.
