Former Gainesville Fire Department Captain James "JJ" Thomas Johnson passed away Monday at the age of 72 following an extended illness.

Johnson served with the Gainesville Fire Department for 25 years, according to his obituary from Memorial Park Funeral Home. He also worked for Northeast Georgia Medical Center and retired after 38 years of service.

Johnson was a U.S. Army veteran, having served two tours in Vietnam.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a member of the GFD family and former Captain," a social media post from the Gainesville Fire Department reads. "We offer our full support to the family in this difficult time, rest easy JJ."

Johnson was born in Gainesville on Jan. 15, 1951, and was the son of George Washington Johnson and Ora Conner Johnson.

"He was a loving husband, father and grandfather," his obituary reads. "A very talented hardworking man and would give anyone the shirt off his back to help them. He was of the Christian faith."
