Fundraiser opens for Hall County Deputy who lost wife, 2 kids in Habersham County wreck

By Austin Eller News Director

The Georgia Law Enforcement Organization opened a fundraising opportunity Wednesday morning for the Hall County Sheriff's Deputy who lost his wife and two children in a two-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon on Ga. 365 in Habersham County.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office made the announcement in a press release, stating all funds raised from the fundraising process will go directly toward Deputy Patrick Neil Holtzclaw.

Those interested in donating can do so by visiting this link. The agency also released this week a photo of the Holtzclaw family, which can be viewed above.

The fundraiser from the Georgia Law Enforcement Organization is operating with the approval of Deputy Holtzclaw, his family and the Hall County Sheriff's Office. The organization is a 501c3 non-profit, therefore, any donations will be tax deductible. No percentage will be deducted from any donation - all funds will go directly to Holtzclaw.

Holtzclaw's wife, Avonlea Holtzclaw, 29, of Dahlonega, and their two children, ages 5 and 6, were three of five people killed Sunday in the severe accident near Ga. 365's intersection with Mount Zion Road.

The Georgia State Patrol previously told AccessWDUN Avonlea Holtzclaw was attempting to cross Ga. 365 southbound onto Mount Zion Road in a Ford Explorer at about 3:30 p.m. The two children were in Avonlea's vehicle. That's when a Chevrolet Corvette, which was driving southbound on Ga. 365 collided with Holtzclaw's vehicle.

Mitchell Boggs, 58, of Marietta, and one other occupant in the Corvette also died in the collision. The GSP did not release the name or age of the second occupant of the Corvette.

While the GSP is the investigating agency in the case, Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell alleged at a Habersham County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday evening the Corvette was traveling "in excess of 150 miles per hour," at the time of the crash.

Terrell's comments about the speed of the Corvette could not be confirmed by the Georgia State Patrol. When asked about the speed of the vehicles or other contributing factors in the crash, a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson said they were unable to release information on those details at this time as the investigation is still active. The agency was also unable to release information about at-fault driver(s).
