Lawrenceville native completes training to join Navy Honor Guard

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A Lawrenceville native recently completed training to join the United States Navy Honor Guard.

A release from the Navy Office of Community Outreach said Seaman Maynuna Hunafa joined the Navy six months ago. She recently completed the 10-week training regimen and is currently serving as a U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guardsman.

"I joined the navy to become stronger and more independent," Hunafa said. "Serving in the Navy to me means that I serve my country and I’m doing something that is honorable to me."

The guard's primary mission is to represent the Navy in Presidential, Joint Armed Forces and public ceremonies in and around Washington, D.C. Some of those ceremonies include Presidential inaugurations and arrival ceremonies for foreign officials.

Sailors in the Honor Guard are hand selected while attending boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois.
