Forrester leads 61st Northeast Amateur Invitational after opening round

RUMFORD, R.I. — Bartley Forrester fired a 7-under par 62 to hold the lead after the opening round of the 61st Northeast Amateur Invitational on Wednesday at Wannamoisett Country Club.

The former North Hall and current Georgia Tech standout had his putter working. Forrester rolled in eight birdies to go with just one bogey on the 6,399-yard course.

The Gainesville-native birdied three of the first four holes before bogeying the Par 4 5th. From there, Forrester caught fire.

Forrester birdied Nos. 7, 10, 13, 14 and 17 to eventually take a two-shot lead over Mathew Riedel of Houston, (Tex.), who finished the day at 5-under 64. Five others sit tied for third at 4-under.

The second round will be on Thursday with the cut being conducted after 54-holes on Friday. Forrester will tee off on Thursday at 1:10 p.m.
