By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter

Gwinnett County Public Schools and Georgia State University will be partnering to offer teachers the opportunity to earn advanced degrees at no cost.

According to a press release from GCPS,  the program will be completely online and will allow teachers in the district to pursue a Master in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education. Teachers will not be financially responsible for tuition, books or fees.

“We are excited and grateful to be partnering with a world-renowned institution like Georgia State University,”  Cathy Hardin, GCPS Chief Human Resources Officer,  said. “Providing teachers with the opportunity to advance their education and sharpen their skills as educators fall right in line with ‘Effectiveness’ and ‘Excellence,’ key tenets of our Blueprint for the Future. This program is the latest example of the steps GCPS is taking to fulfill its commitment to providing students with world-class schools and teachers.”

The M.Ed. program is designed for teachers who already hold a clear renewable certificate in middle-level education, science, or mathematics, at the middle or secondary levels. GCPS said it hopes the classes and coursework will help those who participate in the program expand their knowledge of science, mathematics, or computer science and introduce them to an integrated curriculum related to teaching at the middle or secondary levels.

Teachers in the district can now apply from now until July 15. No fee is required and applicants must show proof of their teaching certifications. Those who wish to apply can do so here

Once accepted into the program, GCPS teachers are required to sign a contract with the district for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.
