Jefferson's Brown named MaxPreps Athlete of the Year

JEFFERSON, Ga. — Sammy Brown's actions on the football field, wrestling mat and track speak for themselves.

Brown, a three-time All-AccessWDUN first-teamer, added one more accolade to his resume earlier this week: MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year.

He joined a list of big-name winners like Derrick Henry, Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Lonzo Ball and Jalen Suggs.

Brown told MaxPreps that the award "means a ton."

"It means a ton," Brown said of the award. "I really appreciate it, and I feel very honored to just be able to represent Jefferson High School. It's a really great blessing to earn that honor, and I just really appreciate it."

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker is the No. 5 overall high school football prospect in the Class of 2024, as well as the No. 1 linebacker in Georgia and No. 2 in his class, per 247Sports.

Brown chose Clemson over Georgia earlier this week.

"I had been praying about it -- specifically about Clemson -- and after that visit, it just seemed that it just all kind of came together and clicked," he told AccessWDUN earlier this week. "It just seemed that God was telling me this is the place I needed to be.

"It was a tough decision for sure. I'm just glad (the recruiting process) is over, and I can just focus on my senior year."

Brown, who recorded 113 tackles last season, also rushed for 1,449 yards and 24 touchdowns.

He's also a two-time Georgia High School Association wrestling state champion with an overall 88-5 career record. He placed sixth in the Class 5A state track meet in the 100 meter, fourth in the long jump and 11th in the 200 meter.
