Tire fire at Road Atlanta sends up black column of smoke seen for miles

A tire fire on the side of the racetrack at Road Atlanta Saturday afternoon sent up a massive column of black smoke that could be seen for miles.

Hall County Fire Rescue was dispatched at approximately 4 p.m. to Road Atlanta on Winder Highway in Braselton after a motorcyclist crashed into a barrier wall, sparking the blaze.

Two units with HCFR responded and found the fire lining the racetrack. In total, there were about 1,000 tires involved in the fire, according to Public Information Officer Kimberlie Ledsinger.

The barrier the motorcyclist crashed into was largely made of tires and foam pads. The motorcyclist was not injured and was able to walk away from the scene after the wreck. He was later evaluated by the racetrack medical staff.

Responders utilized foam and a large amount of water until the flames were brought under control about an hour after they started. Two tenders from North Jackson and Jackson Trail Fire Department, as well as one engine from West Jackson, were also called in to assist.
