Man arrested, woman seriously injured after Gainesville pedestrian accident

A Gainesville man is facing charges after he allegedly hit and seriously injured a woman with his vehicle while driving under the influence Saturday evening in the city.

According to Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook, Fredi Hernandez, 25, was traveling south on E E Butler Parkway at about 9:45 p.m. in a sedan and attempting to turn right onto the I-985 southbound ramp when he struck Rochelle King, 56, who was on a raised concrete median at the time.

Hernandez was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. It's also believed that distracted driving played a role in the accident.

King was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries. Hernandez, who was not injured, was arrested and booked at the Hall County Jail. He was charged with serious injury by vehicle, DUI, possession of marijuana, open container violation, failure to maintain lane and several other charges.

He remained in the Hall County Jail as of Monday afternoon.
