Authorities release name of man found dead in Lake Lanier in Forsyth County

Authorities have released the name of a man who was found dead Friday afternoon in Lake Lanier at War Hill Park on the Forsyth and Dawson County line.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday afternoon the man was identified as Melvin Warnecke, 78.

Warnecke's body was recovered from the lake about 20 feet from the shore. 

The agency said they will not know his exact cause of death until an autopsy is completed.

Forsyth County authorities recovered an apparent drowning victim Friday afternoon from Lake Lanier at War Hill Park on the Forsyth, Dawson County line.

According to a press release from Dawson County Government, the incident was confirmed as a drowning by the Forsyth County Coroner. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and Forsyth County Fire Department both responded to the scene.

Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said a firefighter was able to wade into the water and bring the man's body to shore from about 20 feet out. 

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the victim was a 78-year-old man, but they did not release his name.
