Hall County Farmers Market returns for the summer, now accepting SNAP

By Sydney Hencil Anchor/Reporter
Community members can enjoy local produce with the return on Tuesday of the Hall County Farmers Market.

The market is a non-profit organization located at 734 E. Crescent Dr. in Gainesville that helps local farmers provide fresh, locally grown produce for the community.

It is open on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The market is held under a covered pavilion, with parking spaces, public restrooms and an area for children to play.

According to secretary and treasurer for the Hall County Farmers Market, Chris Arrington, everything that is sold at the Hall County Farmers Market is either grown or made by the vendors themselves.

“They can not go and buy, bring it back and sell it. We have meats that are locally grown, jams and jellies locally made, so is the bread, pastries and crafts,” Arrington said.

Starting this year, customers will also be able to use their EBT card to purchase goods through a partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia, a non-profit that works to provide healthy food to food-insecure families across Georgia.

“So, if you say ‘okay, I only want to take $10 off my card,’ we scan your card for $10 and we give you $10 worth of tokens and then we also give you $10 extra,” Arrington said.

The money will be split and there will be no cash exchange according to Arrington. For example if you only want to take $10 off, you will get $10 in fruit and vegetable tokens and another $10 in market tokens for produce such as eggs, honey and bread.

The extra dollars are made possible through the Georgia Fresh for Less program. This program matches SNAP/EBT dollars at participating farmers markets according to their website.

Some of the Hall County Farmers Market vendors include Howling Ridge Farms, CoubleCakes by Chris, Dances with Bees, Dahlonega Vegetable Farm and Sweet Things Craft Baking.
