Basketball: Griffin named new Chestatee boys coach

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Chestatee did not have to go far to find its next boys basketball coach. In fact, he was already in the building.

Alan Griffin, who served as an assistant with the Lady War Eagles program this past season, was named as the new head coach of the boys team on Monday by Chestatee Principal Christy Cantrell.

"Coach Griffin is well-respected by the basketball community and has quickly earned the admiration of stakeholders here within the Chestatee ranks while serving as an assistant on our Elite 8 (girls) team. I am excited about the future of Chestatee basketball under his guidance and direction,” Cantrell said.

Before his one year with the Chestatee girls, Griffin was the Gainesville girls head coach for four seasons. While at Gainesville, he guided the Lady Red Elephants to the 2020 Lanierland title, their first since 2014. He also was the head boys coach at Pacelli High School in Columbus from 2008-2016, where he led that program to an Elite 8 appearance in 2016.

Chestatee Athletic Director Matt Stowers said he hopes Griffin can bring some stability to the program. He will be the third coach in the last four seasons for the program. Tanner Plemmons stepped down last month after two seasons to become assistant at Lumpkin County

“Cooach Griffin has instant credibility with his past successes as a head coach, but he has also built some great relationships with a lot of our kids already, which will help him hit the ground running," Stowers said. "He will bring some stability and longevity to our boys basketball program; which is exactly what we need.”
