By Austin Eller News Director

The Habersham County Sheriff's Office arrested a Lula man Sunday morning after he allegedly fled from police and attempted to escape into a Cornelia church.

According to Rob Moore, public information officer with the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, a deputy attempted to pull over a truck driven by Michael Lee Walker, 45, at about 1 p.m. Sunday for alleged reckless driving on Ga. 365. Walker allegedly turned onto Duncan Bridge Road toward White County and failed to stop for the patrol car.

Walker eventually turned into the parking lot of Bethesda Fellowship on Charlie Davis Road, where a large crowd was attending Easter Sunday activities. Walker attempted to escape into the church when a struggle ensued. The deputy deployed a Taser in an attempt to arrest Walker.

Bystanders at the church then helped the deputy until a Baldwin police officer and other deputies arrived. No injuries were reported.

Walker was charged with felony obstruction, driving under the influence, two counts of failure to signal a lane change, improper passing, driving on the wrong side of the road, reckless driving, and fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

He remained in the Habersham County Jail as of Monday.
