A Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy is on leave and sheriff's office officials say they plan to fire him after an alleged hit-and-run incident in Walton County this week.
In a release Thursday, Georgia State Patrol officials said the deputy hit several mailboxes while driving on Thompson Mill Road near Loganville at around 10:35 a.m. Wednesday. A trooper arrested the deputy and charged him with DUI and hit-and-run. He was booked into the Walton County Jail before being released to jail staff.
The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office released a statement Thursday afternoon confirming that the man in question was deputy Walter Pollock. The statement said Pollock has been placed on administrative leave and has been served with an intent to terminate.
"We want our community to know that we hold our employees to the highest standards of professionalism. Pending the criminal investigation our Office of Professional Standards will conduct a full review as we are committed to ensuring that the outcome of the incident is in the public’s best interest," the statement read.
No one was injured in the incident. Pollock was also charged with failure to maintain lane and striking a fixed object.
