Several White County public safety agencies worked alongside Truett McConnell’s Rielin & Salmen School of Nursing students in a simulated active shooter situation Wednesday.
During the exercise, White County and Cleveland firefighters assisted nursing students as they performed triage and preliminary assessments of the victims.
According to a press release, the mock active shooter situation acted as an exercise that allowed nursing students to practice setting up and performing mass casualty triage and work alongside local first responders. Students were also able to exercise immediate response in treating various medical conditions.
“I count everything about this event a success,” White County Fire Service Training Captain Lanier Swafford, said. “The operations between all agencies integrated without issue.”
Swafford served as Incident Commander throughout the duration of the exercise.
“I think our students did an excellent job collaborating with the public safety personnel,” Kelly Edwards, Assistant Nursing Professor at TMU, said. “We count this exercise as a success for all involved.”
