Dawson County Sheriff's Officials recently put their drone to use in neighboring Lumpkin County to help find an elderly man with Alzheimer's who had gone missing from his home.
In a social media post, the sheriff's office said it was contacted by Lumpkin County Fire and EMS crews in the early morning hours on February 28. Authorities there were asking the sheriff's office to use its drone to help in the search of the man, who had reportedly been missing for three to four hours.
Deputy Blackstock, the drone operator for the sheriff's office, responded to the scene at around 3:45 a.m. and reportedly found the missing man within 10 minutes of the drone's takeoff. Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office K-9 units and ground crews then arrived to help the man.
"We are proud to partner with our emergency service neighbors to provide potentially life saving resources," the Dawson County Sheriff's Office said in its post. "We are grateful to have the technology which is proving most beneficial for many law enforcement facets, to include the search and rescue of our most vulnerable. This is another great example of coordinated efforts and teamwork."
Footage from the drone search can be found on the sheriff's office's Facebook page.
