Wet, cold weather pushes NASCAR Xfinity race at Fontana to Sunday

They say it never rains in Southern California, according to a popular song. But don’t tell that to the folks at Auto Club Speedway Saturday afternoon.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California has been postponed to Sunday at 8 pm EST due to wet, cold weather that pelted the raceway on Saturday.

Leading up to the scheduled 5 o’clock start of the race, cold rainy and even some snow had fallen over the 2-mile raceway, pelting the racing surface and pushing back any hopes of getting the race started on time.

The inclement weather had already washed out Xfinity Series qualifying, along with NASCAR Cup Series practice and qualifying for Sunday.

But just after 6 pm EST, track drying had reached the point that the engines were fired and the field rolled off.  That didn't last long, as rain returned and the cars were brought back to pit road at 6:12 pm EST without having seen a lap at speed.

After another attempt to dry the racing surface, NASCAR officials made the call to push the race to Sunday evening, following the scheduled NASCAR Cup Series race.

The starting field for the Xfinity Series was set by NASCAR’s qualifying metric, putting Winston, Georgia's Austin Hill, fresh off a win at Daytona, on the pole, with John Hunter Nemechek on the outside of the front row.  Justin Allgaier will start third, with Parker Retzlaff fourth, and Talking Rock Georgia's Chandler Smith fifth.

Riley Herbst, Jeb Burton, Cole Custer, Josh Williams, and Atlanta, Georgia's Brandon Jones round out the top 10 starters.

Once the race gets underway, WDUN will carry live MRN Radio coverage of the event on 102.9 FM, AM 550 and streaming live on AccessWDUN.
