By Austin Eller News Director

A Clermont man was arrested Sunday afternoon in Hall County in connection with outstanding warrants after he reportedly fled from a traffic stop in the county early in January.

According to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office, Calvin Edward Stewart, III, 45, was arrested on nine warrants related to the traffic stop.

A Hall County Sheriff's Deputy stopped Stewart on Broome Road at about 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 9. The deputy had reportedly seen Stewart driving at 70 mph in a 35 mph zone. Stewart also allegedly failed to maintain his lane of travel.

Stewart was unable to produce a driver's license or proof of insurance during the traffic stop. He also gave the deputy a fake name before he sped away from the scene.

Deputies then received a report at about 4 p.m. Sunday that Stewart was at a home on East Hall Road. Stewart ran into nearby woods when deputies went to the home to arrest him.

A K9 team was able to track Stewart and arrest him. He had about three grams of methamphetamine in his possession at the time of his arrest.

Stewart faces the following charges from the incident on Jan. 9:

•       Failure to maintain lane
•       Reckless driving
•       No proof of insurance
•       No driver’s license on person
•       Speeding
•       Giving false information to officer
•       Obstruction of an officer
•       Fleeing or attempting to elude
•       Probation violation

He faces felony possession of methamphetamine and two counts of misdemeanor obstruction of an officer in relation to the incident on Sunday.

He remained in the Hall County Jail as of Monday morning.
