Jackson County School Board member named interim Barrow County Schools superintendent

A member of the Jackson County Board of Education has been named the interim superintendent of the Barrow County School System.

Rob Johnson will take up the role on Jan. 1 following the departure of Superintendent Chris McMichael.

A press release from Barrow County Schools said Johnson will serve in the role until a permanent superintendent is named.

Johnson previously served as assistant superintendent in Barrow County and as principal of Winder-Barrow High School and Russell Middle School. Additionally, he went on to become superintendent of Laurens County Schools in 2012 until his retirement in 2016.

He has also served as school climate specialist with Northeast Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency since 2016.

In total, Johnson has over 40 years of educational experience.

The Barrow County School System announced on Dec. 8 that current superintendent McMichael would be leaving his position on Dec. 31.

"After much deep and mutual reflection, we both realize that we have traveled as far as we can together, and it is time for Dr. McMichael to apply his many talents to the benefit of new schools and new school systems, and for the Board of Education to seek his worthy successor," the Barrow County Board of Education and McMichael said in a joint letter. "His shoes will not be easy to fill."
