Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation announced Wednesday that the Board of Directors has approved a rate decrease that will take effect in January 2024.
The rate reduction will occur for a billing component utilized in most of the Sawnee EMC rate schedule, which will affect all Sawnee EMC residential customers and most of the commercial accounts, according to officials.
The Wholesale Power Adjustment Cost is reportedly a factor that changes periodically and is necessary to account for shifts in the Sawnee EMC power and other costs. The billing adjustment provides a way to account for the changes seen in factors used to generate electricity, as well as other utility items.
“As an electric cooperative, Sawnee EMC’s Board reviews the WPCA on a regular basis and adjusts it accordingly, which is an efficient practice when compared to a permanent rate change,” Blake House, Vice President of Member Services said.
With the WPCA decrease, customers can reportedly expect to see an average reduction of $16.63 per 1,000 kWh consumed, as compared to their December 2023 billing statements, officials said Wednesday.
“It is important to communicate to our member-owners, that Sawnee EMC’s board and staff are always conscious of keeping the cost of electricity affordable and keeping the supply reliable,” CEO Michael Goodroe said. “Many variables are considered when setting the WPCA factor, and when it is prudent to do so, we will pass these savings on to our members.”
Sawnee EMC is headquartered in Cumming and serves approximately 191,000 accounts in seven counties across North Georgia.
