Longtime Gainesville City School Board members Sammy Smith and Willie Mitchell were honored at the Gainesville City School Board meeting on Monday night.
Smith and Mitchell announced earlier this year that they would not run for reelection.
Smith has been a member since 2008 and will be honored by Gainesville High School by naming the library the Sammy Smith Media Center.
"It's an honor for this board to have the privilege to name schools or component parts, so I appreciate the support from the colleagues on that concept," Smith said about the naming of the Media Center.
Willie Mitchell has been on the Gainesville City School Board since 1990 and will be having a road named in his honor.
The road will be named Willie Mitchell Drive and is the access point connecting Positive Place to Collins Circle at Fair Street International Academy.
When asked about the road bearing his name Mitchell said "I praise God for the honor and it was all about service, it's an honor."
The Board unanimously approved both measures at their meeting.
"Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Smith have been not only great board members to me, but they've been mentors, they've been friends, they've been two people I can count on to give me the truth about things and also be two people that I know, just care about kids and that's what we're here for" said Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Williams.
Both the Sammy Smith Media Center and Willie Mitchell Drive will officially be unveiled in the Spring of 2024.
