A driver was killed after they reportedly fled from police Friday evening in Hart County and hit a tree.

According to a press release from the Georgia State Patrol, state troopers and Hart County Sheriff's Deputies were conducting a safety check just after 10:00 p.m. Friday on GA 77 at Bio Church Road.

A Nissan Frontier approached the safety check, and the driver did not show authorities a driver's license. A deputy told the driver to pull into a nearby gas station, but the driver then fled from the area.

Troopers and Deputies activated their emergency equipment and chased after the driver. But, by the time they reached the vehicle, it had left the roadway, hit a tree and caught fire.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver had not been identified as of Saturday morning.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
