A Gainesville High School senior and baseball player at the school is in a coma after an incident Monday at the school's batting cages.
In an update provided early Wednesday evening, Gainesville City Schools Spokeswoman Joy Griffin identified the student as Jeremy Medina. Medina was a pitcher and catcher for Gainesville High School's 2022 baseball team.
Griffin said Medina was accidentally struck in the head by a baseball bat at about 1:20 p.m. Monday while at the batting cage.
Medina remained in a coma at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville as of Wednesday evening.
"Jeremy and his family are firm believers in Jesus Christ and His redemptive love, and are requesting prayer during this extremely difficult time," Griffin said.

A player on the Gainesville High School baseball team was critically injured Monday afternoon while practicing in the batting cages on the school campus.
The student’s name has not been released. He was reportedly transported to a local hospital in stable condition, according to school spokeswoman Joy Griffin.
“The entire Gainesville community is devastated by the news,” Griffin said in a text to AccessWDUN Monday evening. “School administrators, team and coaches are together and in contact with the family.”
