Online traffic violation scam attempt targets Jackson County residents - and sheriff

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

It's one thing when a sheriff's office warns the public about an ongoing, online scam.  It's another when the scammers also target the sheriff and deputies as part of the scam.

That's what Jackson County's Sheriff Janis Mangum is warning area residents to avoid within their email accounts.

Sheriff Mangum and several employees recently received emails claiming to be Jefferson Police, citing each of them for recent speeding infractions. The emails are not from Jefferson's Police department, and are a part of a scam.

Mangum says violators would not only get an actual letter with a picture of the vehicle, they also would confirm the tag number, and provide proper payment options.
