Gainesville authorities offer tips to stay safe this Halloween

By Hamilton Keener Anchor / Reporter

The Gainesville Police Department is recommending tips to keep people safe while celebrating Halloween on Tuesday.

Officials said that kids who are planning to trick or treat should wear reflective clothing and always cross the street at crosswalks.

“Make sure that you're visible in the street or on the sidewalks,” Corporal Drew Reed said. “We ask all those to stay on the sidewalks if you're on a busier roadway, and if there's accessibility for the sidewalks.”

Kids who will be trick or treating without parents are advised to stay in a group. Reed said parents should always accompany small children.

“Only approach well-lit homes and areas that are well-lit,” Reed said.

After the night is over parents are asked to check their children's goodies.

“Watch out for homemade goods or goods that have not been packaged from a store,” Reed said.

Drivers are advised to be vigilant and aware.

“We ask that motorists watch out while traveling in neighborhoods and to be extra cautious on Halloween night,” Reed said. “Be prepared to break for a child that may be running across the roadway especially if you have a high volume area of trick-or-treaters.”

Have a safe and fun Halloween!
