Softball playoffs: Buford, Banks Co. will play for state titles

HOMER, Ga.  — Buford will get a chance to defend its state title while Banks County will get a chance for its first crown since 2019 as both advanced to Columbus and the Elite 8 tournaments on Thursday in girls softball action.

Banks County rolled through the Homer Super Regional, completing an unbeaten run with a 2-1 win over Haralson County to advance.

It’s the first trip to Columbus for Banks County (21-5) since winning the Class 2A state title in 2019.

The Lady Leopards, the Region 8-2A champions, gave up just six runs in wins over Redan (17-1), Haralson County (6-4), and Haralson County again, 2-1 in the regional final.

Buford (28-0) had no trouble in its Class 7A regional at the Buford Softball Complex, beating Kennesaw Mountain (13-0), Milton (8-0), and hammering Milton again, 12-0, in the regional final.

Banks County will open its tournament on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 3 p.m. against Toombs County.

Buford will open its tournament on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 5 p.m. against Lowndes.

In Class 6A, North Forsyth forced a decided Game 3 with Lassiter but could complete the comeback, falling 15-6 in the Super Regional final.

In Class 5A, Jefferson lost and in Class 4A, both North Hall and East Forsyth all fell in Super Regional finals with chances to advance.

Union County dropped a tough 6-5 decision to Rockmart in a Class 2A Super Regional finals with a chance to get to its third straight Elite 8.
