Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board recommends approval of bioenergy center

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals board recommended approval of annexation and rezoning for an over 50-acre enclosed anaerobic digestion facility.

The property was recommended to be rezoned from planned industrial development to heavy industrial.

The proposed facility would be built at 2544 Monroe Drive and 1570 Athens Highway.

The applicant BDC Gainesville, LLC said the facility will use organic feedstock produced by local food manufacturers and transform it into renewable energy.

“The purpose of the proposed enclosed anaerobic digestion facility is to transform feedstock consistent with various food production sources from area poultry and agricultural industries into biogas,” Planning and Appeals Board Deputy Director Matt Tate said. “Which is further treated on-site and will produce renewable natural gas as well as secondary digest compost-like that can be land applied and mixed to create nutrient-rich topsoils.”

The facility will operate 365 days a year with 17 employees working across two shifts.

The recommendation will go before the Gainesville City Council on Nov 7 for a final vote.
