Six Hall County Jail inmates are facing charges after authorities said they were involved in a fight in a jail cell earlier this week.
A release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office said the alleged fight happened just after midnight Wednesday morning and was initially between two inmates who had been in a verbal altercation throughout the day Tuesday. Those two inmates were Michael Serrato-Macedo, age 17 of Gainesville and Daronte Marquiz Ellis, age 30 of Athens.
"There were apparently some exchanges of racial slurs and all of that escalated as the day went on," Hall County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer B.J. Williams said. "The two agreed that they would have a physical fight after lights out that night."
Williams said once the two began fighting, four other inmates joined in the confrontation with several of them punching and kicking Ellis. She said jail officers later found Ellis with a black and swollen eye.
