A man was killed Monday night after he was struck by a train near Georgia Avenue and Industrial Boulevard in Gainesville.
According to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the victim was identified as Danny Diaz, 42.
Investigators said Diaz was struck by a northbound train at about 9:30 p.m. The train conductor saw Diaz and applied the brakes on the train while sounding several warnings, but Diaz did not exit the tracks. As a result, Diaz was hit by the train. He was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
Diaz was a member of Gainesville's homeless community. His next of kin have been notified.
Officials with Norfolk Southern Railroad and the Hall County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the incident.
