CFB: Jefferson’s Malaki Starks named to Freshman All-America Team

By AccessWDUN Staff

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia defensive back and former Jefferson standout Malaki Starks has been named to the Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America.

He joins Bulldog defensive lineman Mykel Williams on the team.

Starks, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of Jefferson, Ga., started 14 games for the Bulldogs and played in all 15. He finished third on the team with 68 tackles and tied for second with a pair of interceptions.

Williams, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound native of Columbus, Ga., led the Bulldogs with 4.5 sacks, 30 quarterback pressures plus tallied 28 tackles in 15 games with two starts.  Earlier this season, Starks and Williams earned College Football News Freshman All-America honors plus were named to the Freshman All-SEC squad.

In the College Football Playoff National Championship Game rout of No. 3 TCU, Williams registered a sack and made a pair of tackles, while Starks was credited with one tackle. Top-ranked Georgia (15-0) claimed its fourth national championship this past Monday and was the first team to win back-to-back titles in the College Football Playoff era.

Georgia was one of three schools to place two players on this year’s 32-man FWAA Freshman All-America team. Georgia now has had 28 players earn Freshman All-America honors since 2003.
