Football: Buford scores 28 unanswered to beat Carver 44-16

BUFORD, Ga. — Trailing 16-15 at halftime, Buford made the better adjustments, scoring the final four touchdowns of the night to take a 44-16 win over Carver-Atlanta Friday.

The Wolves took an early lead on a 25-yard pass from Dylan Wittke to KJ Bolden that gave Buford a 7-0 lead. Carver answered early in the second period on a 39-yard pass, followed up by a two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead.

Justice Haynes answered late in the period, hauling in a 66-yard pass from Wittke before a two-point play from Eli McElwaney gave Buford a 15-7 lead, but the ensuing kickoff from Carver was returned for a touchdown and two-point play to give the visitors a 16-15 lead at halftime.

Haynes took over in the second half, scoring early in the third on a 60-yard run that gave the Wolves a 23-16 lead. After Justin Baker found the endzone with 4:27 to play in the period, Haynes had another long touchdown run, this time from 53 yards away, giving Buford a 37-16 lead. Ryan McKinnis punched it in from two yards out early in the fourth to finish the scoring for Buford.

The Wolves had 502 yards of offense on the night with Haynes ending with 144 yards rushing on just seven carries. Wittke was 10-for-20 passing for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Buford will travel to Marietta next week in their final tune up before region play.
