Seven family members were displaced from a house in Lilburn after a fire caused major damage to the rear of the home.

Gwinnett Fire and Rescue Services personnel were dispatched to the house in the 5500 block on Arrowind Road NW about 4:17 a.m. Sunday morning. crews found heavy fire showing from the rear of a two-story residence. The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes.

The home sustained extensive fire damage throughout both floors. A home located to the left of residence sustained minor radiant heat damage to the vinyl siding.

Family members told the fire department that an adult male investigated a noise he heard while sleeping and found fire consuming the screened-in patio in the rear of the home. The male then alerted the rest of the family, and everyone safely evacuated. While the home was equipped with smoke alarms, the alarms did not activate due to the initial location of the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the family of seven including three adults and four children.

No injuries were reported but two bearded dragons inside the home did not survive.
A fire investigator determined the fire originated inside the screened-in patio in the rear of the home. The exact cause of the fire is undetermined.
