Football: Region 8-4A openers headline this week's radio lineup

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

What else do we need to know about Week 3?

It was raining across the area, creating some wet, nasty fields, but that didn't stop the week's action from being some of the best around.

Perhaps the best game was at Tom Riden Stadium in Buford, where the Wolves, led by Alabama commit Justice Haynes, scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the win over No. 4 North Cobb. Haynes rushed for 200 plus yards and scored all three touchdowns for the Wolves.

Stephens County found its offense against Flowery Branch in a 27-11 win, Lumpkin County is 3-0 for the first time since 2011, Gainesville rallied back to beat Monroe Area, 23-13, and North Forsyth also rallied back to beat arch-rival West Forsyth, 28-24, and Banks County is 2-0.

This week's slate only has 14 games, and the Jacobs Media airwaves will be filled with action, including three games, our Conditioned Air Systems Tailgate Show and the Hardy Chevrolet Scoreboard Show.

Cherokee Bluff at Madison County -- Cherokee Bluff hasn't struggled on the side of the ball that we thought they might entering the season. The offense seems to be OK, averaging 36.5 points per game after losing several key skill players to graduation. It's the defense that has shown to be very vulnerable, giving up a whopping 44.5 points per game. Will that change this week as they open Region 8-4A play in Danielsville? The Bears have had a couple of weeks now to make those improvements.

On the other hand, Madison County is averaging 34.5 points per game on offense and is 1-1, and have a solid rushing attack behind Camden Smith. With the Red Raiders' defense have enough firepower to slow down the Bears, or will it be a shootout? You can listen to the game on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live)

East Hall at Chestatee -- East Hall is 2-0 for the first time since 2011, and the War Eagles are 0-2. Does any of that really matter when these two cross-county foes play each other? Well, in the last five games, the two have combined to average 94 points per game. Yes, 94 points per game. And in last year's contest, they combined for 82 points. The War Eagles ultimately won the game, 62-50. So, the new scoreboard at the Lynn Cottrell Complex could need a generator on standby. In all reality, the Vikings come into this year's edition as the better team.

Meanwhile, the War Eagles are seeking an improvement on both sides of the ball, giving up 48.5 points per game while only scoring 10 ppg. Will this one be another shootout? The stats prove otherwise in the Region 8-4A opener. You can hear the game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).

Clarke Central at Gainesville -- Gainesville, Gainesville, Gainesville. If you're a Big Red fan, I'm sure you've already bought a season's supply of Tums. The Red Elephants are 3-0 but have given the fans and the coaching staff a steady dose of acid reflux over the last three weeks. Last week, Gainesville had to rally to beat Monroe Area. The week before had to rally past Mountain View and, in the opener, had to hold off a Marist comeback. The good news, coach Josh Niblett and his staff have the Red Elephants trending upwards. If Gainesville can put together two good halves of football this week, fans should be able to keep that bottle of Tums in their back pocket. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
