A suspect in a violent Gwinnett County carjacking didn’t get very far before being caught. On Sunday morning, a 911 caller in Lawrenceville requested help after he was attacked and his car stolen at a gas station on Buford Rd.
According to WSB-TV, while police were on their way to the scene, they passed the stolen vehicle and chased the suspect. The suspect fled, but crashed into a guardrail, totaling the car. They arrested Bryce Cox, 18, of Lawrenceville. Police found a ski mask and gun in his possession when he was arrested.
The attack happened around 11 a.m. in broad daylight. The victim, who was unnamed, said that when he pulled up to the front of the gas station, he got out of his car and was immediately held at gunpoint. He said that the suspect told him to hand over the keys. In surveillance video from the gas station, released by WSB-TV, the attacker can be seen beating the man over the head multiple times before stealing the vehicle. Due to his head injuries, the victim requested an ambulance.
Cox is in jail without bond and he faces nine different charges, according to Gwinnett County Jail records. His charges, several of which are felonies, include aggravated assault, hijacking a motor vehicle, armed robbery, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, battery, and giving false information to a law enforcement officer.
Jail records show that Cox was arrested two other times recently for violent crimes. He remains in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
