Mashburn Elementary School in Forsyth County was recently named the recipient of the inaugural Annual Tools For Schools grant from academic planner company Order Out of Chaos.
Order Out of Chaos held a ceremony at the school Tuesday where the company's founder, Leslie Josel, awarded the $5,000 grant to Principal Steve Miller. The grant was awarded in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the company's Academic Planner: A Tool for Time Management.
The grant was used for the purchase of a sandbox for the school's skills-based autism class.
"We have three skills-based autism classes ... and they're very tactilely driven, so they like to play and dig and things like that," Miller said. "Unfortunately, in Georgia, all we have is red clay and dirt, so we were sending them home filthy all the time. So we purchased the sandbox ... they've already been out here digging and playing in the sandbox."
Miller said they also updated the school's marquee and purchased Nicky's folders for all of the school's students with the funds.
Josel said she had several criteria in mind when she was searching for the first recipient of the grant. Specifically, she wanted to give the grant to an elementary school with skills-based autism classes.
"It's such an honor for Mashburn to be the first recipient," Miller said.
Order Out of Chaos plans to give out the grant on an annual basis.
