By Sydney Hencil Anchor/Reporter

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office arrested two of its own Monday afternoon.

Hunter Lewis Perkins, 21, and Xavier Jamal McWhorter, 28, both of Winder, are charged with crimes related to smuggling contraband into the Barrow County Jail.

According to a press release from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, the two turned themselves into the Barrow County Detention Center on charges of bribery, trading with inmates without consent of the warden or superintendent, items prohibited for possession by inmates and violation of the oath of a public officer.

“The trust that exists between our office and the community is very important to all of us at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.  When someone violates that trust, we will act swiftly,” said Sheriff Jud Smith in a press release.

Allegations of the wrongdoing had been made known to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office by Barrow County Detention Center employees.  The Sheriff's Office then contacted the GBI requesting an investigation.

“We moved very quickly on this and immediately contacted the GBI,” Smith said.

The investigation into this case is continuing.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
