Former Gwinnett County jailer arrested on contraband charges

Officers with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office on Friday arrested one of their former jailers on contraband charges.

Kenneth Sutton faces charges of violation of oath of office, conspiracy to commit introduction of contraband, introduction of contraband (drugs), distribution of MDMA (ecstasy), distribution of methamphetamine, distribution of marijuana (less than 1 ounce) and use of a communication facility in committing a felony.

Sutton is jailed without bond and was terminated from the agency. He had been employed with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office since January 2018.

The Investigative Services Unit and the Jail Intelligence Unit performed the investigation. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office cooperated with the sheriff’s office to charge Sutton.

The Gwinnett County Jail has implemented additional security measures to prevent the smuggling of contraband items to inmates. This year, the jail purchased two additional K-9s for the Jail Division.

Sheriff Keybo Taylor initially brought the K-9s to the jail in 2021. He also increased unit inspections and adjusted policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the facility.

The investigation is active and ongoing and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office will share updates as they become available.
