Lawrenceville reaches settlement with former police captain

The City of Lawrenceville and a former captain with the Lawrenceville Police Department reached a settlement Friday in regards to a sexual harassment scandal and lawsuit within the department.

According to open records obtained by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the City of Lawrenceville will pay Tawyna Gilovanni $300,000 for a global settlement of her claims.

As per the settlement, Gilovanni and her attorney must withdraw a lawsuit that they were in the process of filing. Gilovanni must also withdraw an amendment to her U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charge, where she accused acting police chief Maj. Myron Walker of retaliating against her.

Gilovanni filed the sexual harassment claims with the city last year. An investigation conducted by the city determined that former Chief Timothy Wallis and Capt. Christopher Ryan Morgan sexually harrassed Gilovanni and created a hostile work environment.

Before investigators could question Morgan, he resigned in December. Wallis also retired shortly after he was placed on suspension.

Wallis filed a federal lawsuit against the city in the wake of his retirement, claiming the city presented him with an ultimatum – to quit or to risk being fired from speaking to the media about the case. This lawsuit is still pending.

The settlement also states that Gilovanni cannot make derogatory statements about the City of Lawrenceville, Walker or Lawrenceville City Manager Chuck Warbington. This applies while both officials remain employed by the City of Lawrenceville, and the same condition applies to Walker and Warbington as well.

Gilovanni said in a joint statement, which was signed by herself and Warbington, that she resigned voluntarily on June 23
