Gwinnett County Police Department K9 Kai had a leg amputated at the end of June after he was allegedly shot by an Oakwood teen on May 23.

Levi Kennedy Bryan, 17, allegedly shot K9 Kai multiple times during a shootout with police on Pine Lane.

Kai was treated at North Georgia Veterinary Specialists and was later discharged. However, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kai's front left leg did not heal properly and had to be amputated on June 30.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said Kai is expected to recover from the amputation.

Kai is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois dual-purpose (narcotics and patrol) K9. He has been with the Gwinnett County Police Department for under a year.
