Weekend lightning suspected of causing death of man in Rabun County

An autopsy will determine whether a man in Rabun County died after being struck by lightning over the weekend, as it appears.

Rabun County Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Panell said the incident happened just after 3:30 Saturday at a home on Blacks Creek Drive in Mountain City.

When crews arrived, they found a man in his 30s unresponsive on the ground near a contracting van, Panell said. There was a hole in the driveway six to eight inches from his feet that appeared to be a lightning strike.

When emergency personnel arrived, bystanders were administering CPR to the man.

Rabun County EMS transported the victim in critical condition to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton. Subsequently, the man succumbed from the injuries sustained in this incident.

The man’s name has not been released yet pending the ongoing investigation by the Rabun County Coroner’s Office.
