The Georgia Department of Transportation has asked the public for feedback regarding a proposal for a new bridge crossing Lake Lanier as part of Thompson Bridge Road.
The bridge would be built next to the current southbound bridge crossing the lake. The goal of the project is to replace the current northbound bridge, which was constructed in 1956. The existing southbound bridge would become the new northbound bridge once the project is complete, while the brand new bridge would become the new southbound bridge. The existing northbound bridge would be demolished.
Traffic would be maintained during the project, which has an estimated cost of $41,433,038.
"The proposed structure would be approximately 1,170 feet long by 43.17 feet wide," reads GDOT's website. "This would include two 12-foot wide travel lanes, a 10-foot wide outside shoulder, and a 4-foot wide inside shoulder."
Elizabeth Johnson, GDOT district one communications officer, said the organization needs feedback from the community to formulate the project further.
"We have to know what the existing issues are to the area," Johnson said. "Only the community that lives there would really know that."
More information about the proposed bridge and a form to submit feedback to GDOT can be found here. GDOT is accepting public input until July 11, 2022.
