As Georgia’s gas prices continue to rise this summer, AAA is advising families to reconsider their summer travel plans.
Average gas prices jumped from a high of $4.29 in March to the current average of $4.48. Crude oil, which accounts for nearly half of gas prices, is trending over $120 a barrel.
However, AAA spokeswoman Montrae Waiters spoke on WDUN’s Newsroom and said regular vehicle maintenance can optimize fuel economy.
“Get the junk out of your trunk,” Waiters said. “So if you're looking at making sure your tires are inflated correctly, your car is running well [and] you don't have your car weighed down, it can save you more than pennies to the gallon.”
If families still plan to travel, Waiters suggested putting aside money for travel-related expenses. Additionally, mobile apps can help motorists find the lowest gas prices.
“Therefore, you're able to kind of map out your plan, when it comes to where you have to go,” Waiters said.
Gas prices vary by location due to demand and local taxes.
Carpooling and reducing non-essential trips is another strategy to reduce fuel usage. Waiters said paying with cash instead of a credit card could also help drivers save money.
Waiters said the market is fluid and volatile, but a recession could potentially reduce pump prices.
“It may be that gas prices go past $5 [and] folks really start to pull back with travels,” Waiters said. “That can possibly cause a recession and cause gas prices to maybe come down a little. But we just don't know, because folks are still getting out there and hitting the roads.”
