Lawrenceville driver dies four days after Elbert County wreck

A Gwinnett County man who was facing numerous charges after he and four others were seriously injured in a three-vehicle wreck in Elbert County Friday afternoon has died.

Demonte Alexander Norman, 35, of Lawrenceville died Tuesday at Augusta University Medical Center, said Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond.

The Georgia State Patrol said Norman was traveling west on Ga. 72 (Calhoun Falls Highway) in an Infiniti G37 passing in a no-passing zone in a curve when it collided with a Honda CRV and a GMC Yukon.

Investigating troopers found the speedometer on the Infiniti stuck just under 100 mph.

The 2022 Honda was driven by Kyle Burgess, 21, of Saint Ann, Mo. Passengers in Burgess’s vehicle included 20-year-old Dianna Godoy, 45-year-old Rosie Manuel, and 9-year-old Destinica Godoy.

Burgess and all three of his passengers suffered significant injuries, including broken bones, GSP reports. All reside in Missouri.

Dianne Scott Dutton, 71, of Elberton was driving the 2007 GMC Yukon involved. She was seriously injured and at last report was awaiting surgery on her legs, GSP reports.

Norman was airlifted to Augusta University Medical Center after suffering serious injuries, but did not recover.

GSP had charged Norman with three counts of serious injury by vehicle, DUI, reckless driving, and passing in a no-passing zone.

The wreck happened just after 2:20 Friday and shut down the highway for an extended time.
