Jackson Co. DFCS employee indicted for elder exploitation

By Jonathan O'Brien Anchor/Reporter

A grand jury has indicted a former employee of the Jackson County Division of Family and Children Services on three charges of elder exploitation, forgery and identity fraud.

According to the indictment, Marquetta Curry allegedly took advantage of two elderly women in April 2021.

Prosecutors say Curry used her official capacity as a DFCS employee to get one woman, Reba Holmes, to sign a $30,000 check made out to Curry. The indictment stated that the victim "believed she had a legal obligation to account for any increase in personal funds to Medicaid."

Curry is also charged with forgery and identity fraud for allegedly trying to cash another $30,000 check from a second victim, Brenda Snelling, at a local bank. According to the indictment, Curry told bank employees she was the victim's great-niece.

"We are working every single day to protect Georgia's older and at-risk adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation of any kind," Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said in a press release. "This includes investigating healthcare billing fraud and prosecuting those who attempt to steal from our most vulnerable. We are proud of this latest indictment from our Medicaid Fraud Division and look forward to presenting our case in court."

If found guilty, Curry faces decades in prison.
